It depends on the person. I used smurfs in gpgnet days when I was on a comeback from months away when I would play embarrassingly bad. Some do it just to beat up on noobs ( see V/Cyth/Greenapple/Katherine/Ichiban/Stirfriedchicken and prolly several other smurf accounts) and others do it for trolls sake.

There has been an increased number of smurfs appearing lately, and it's being dealt with as we..type.
On a side note: just because someone you've never seen before beat you, it doesn't mean he/she is a smurf, even if he/she has very few games played; it might be an old gpgnet player that had just heard of FAF and came back.

Having said that; smurfing and pretending to be a new player is just not cool, so don't do it, or you might scare away the REAL new players.
