It's been so long since I've tried this with Cybran I don't remember what happens. But with UEF, when I do exactly what you describe, they assist the shield for a little less than a second, then they stop. Unless I babysit them by constantly issuing an assist command they will not stay on the shield.

Hmmm... perhaps it's a bug? I will sandbox this later when I get home and post results.

What about UEF engineer stations. Will they automatically go help a hurt shield (as long as nothing else is needing repaired) ?

Yes, yes, and yes.

Mine never do this for me. What am I doing wrong?

With the cybran engineering stations you need to select the station itself and assist the shield.

With the UEF station, there is a little more work, where you need to select the drones themselves by double-clicking one, then assist the shield. It's kind of frustrating that the UEF station needs some extra micro-management, but you can do it.

Shields will help you to an extent but you can't build enough shields fast enough to survive very long.
You are putting all your mass and a lot of build power into shields & assisting while your opponent is building more arty or experimentals.
This is a losing strategy.

When a Scathis appears it needs to be destroyed asap.

This isn't true at all... You can build enough shields to withstand it and get enough army to defeat it.

scathis has 1579 dps, uef t3 shield has 15k hp for 3k mass, 4988 buildtime (1 hp per 0.2 mass, ~0.33 bt)
to repair at 1579 dps we'd need 1579*0.2mass/s (=315,8) and cover 1579*0.33bt/s (=521bt/s)
ok, those 521bt/s in t3 engies (30 buildpower/s) gives us 17.366, so we need more than 17 t3 engies working without stalling on the shield to keep it up

feel free to correct wrong assumptions or miscalculations :)

Yes, yes, and yes. At the 35+ minute mark in games I always make about 4-5 engineering stations to build supp comms, t3 air, or experimentals. A fully-upgraded engineering station for Cybran will dispense mass at a rate of 137 per tick, which is about the same for a T3 comm. If you select the engineering station and right-click a building such as a shield, TML, etc it will hasten the build/regen with ease.

As a side note, one should always ask for a UEF or Cybran engie if they are Aeon or Sera late game so they can use these tools. A good Aeon air player will do this as they are WAY better than t1 engie spam. At some point experimental wrecks will litter the field in lengthy games and in order to use that without waste you need that kind of build power.

A last option is to use an engineer-suite Support Commander which are the best builders in the game. They will dispense absurd amounts of energy and mass that will probably not be met in almost any game.
