im with Zepilot here, rating is not always ranking. I like the system of FAF with the rating, that actually makes it possible to make quite balanced games even if you never have played half of the players in your match before. It would not make sense, to make "fun" games (all games are for fun) that would actually hide results from the rating, and therefore making it not work. If a player only plays fungames and is pretty good, he joins a "normal" game with a rating that says "noob" and he will make the match uneven.

Additionally as mentioned play supremacy, adjustable speed or mods to be out of the grid.

you r right on that and i understand what u mean, but ppl dont see it that way. for many the rating is a ranking. losing points is bad and gaining some is good. that's it. they dont bother about the calculation - they dont bother about balancing. they bother about the comparison with other players. and this tool give them a perfect indication.

if you call it ladder or ranking or rating or just score - it doesnt matter. it makes a list, on the top is the best on the bottom the worst. and it is important where you are.

furthermore playing new maps or trying new bo's can risk a bad rating so they ask for a "no rating" button because if they lose they go down in the list.

the rating tool judges the skill of the player. you say this is good because it is easier to balance the games. ok - but some don't want to be judged as lower medium player or just want to try a new bo or new maps. i understand those guys too.

I know, it's easy to see if a game is ranked, if you know which parameters need to be set to play ranked. But how often does it happen that you join a server, you thinks everything is set to default, maybe just have at least a look on the share conditions and after the game you see "game was not ranked, game speed was set to adjustable" ... :)
If I would understand how to change the code I would do it by myself ...

Zep, how long would it take to make a change like this as a total newbie (with some programming background)

rank/ladder - if you play good you are on the top. if you play bad you are at the end. no matter what you do. doesn't matter the calculation behind it.

i play 10000 games and got a rank score of 1600. after that i get a mentor and win 10 games vs 2200 rated players my rank will just increase slightly. that's ok because in average i am still a medium skilled player.

anyway it is a ladder or ranking or rating of players. no matter the system. and if you just wana play for fun without that somethings rates or ranks you or puts you on a lists to be compared with other players (which is a ladder for me) you can put the gamespeed to adjustable.

Not that anyone will bother with that solution when they can moan instead, and use it as an excuse for their mediocre rank.

A ladder is something you can always climb, that's why it's called a ladder.
The rating system we use place you at you rank, then you stop moving whatever you do (unless you perform better or worst all the time). That's not how a ladder works.

You are rated depending of your performances. There is no fear to have.
A good example of what they get it wrong : I often read people complaining that their rating doesn't change a lot after a victory. But the opposite is true too, but nobody seems to notice it :)

Once you reach your level, your rating won't change much. You can have a 30% win ratio and still be 1800. (that must be my ratio and rating). Because it's depend of how the system is confident about your level and against who you play.

Now, the problem is that some players are faced to their mediocrity (or simply they think they are way better than they are actually) and can't handle it. But that's a problem they have to talk with a psychoanalyst, not me :)

But what I should remove is the debug message with the score result after the game, and the rank numbers in the global ranking page.

But the last multi-players games (or even solo games) I've played recently were used to put me in a kind of global ranking on way on another (battlefield 3 has all kind of stats and skill rating, and put me in ranking pages all the time, outside and inside the game, x-com has a world ladder after the solo).

I don't see why it's a problem with FA (it's THE kind of game to do that).

The purpose of the ranking is to get as many games as possible to be as representative as possible, so no.

Some people just want to play without the added stress knowing that the game results will counts towards your rating, which others will invariably use to judge you when deciding upon stuff like team balance or even whether to let to play. It would help in some instances for noobs to feel more comfortable playing with people of higher rating.
