Hi. My name is AJ.
I thought I would take this chance to introduce myself as a very recent convert from steam to FAF (on a recommendation from Casimus) and give a few thoughts on the communities.
FAF has a bad reputation on steam. Mainly centred around the arrogance, noob hating and superiority of the FAF community. Its often portrayed as a no fun, hypercompetitive environment.

In my short time here, while there has being some rudeness and arrogance, people have being generally friendly and I have had some really fun games. The game itself is much more balanced (really surprised me when I try to move my ACU in a t1 trans) and the players are of a higher standard. I am loving the FAF Awareness Series btw!

I am having some difficulty adjusting to the game here, due to the jump in opponent's skill and rarely playing 1v1 (when I have, only on a 1v1 map). Playing here is going to make me a better player and I am glad I gave it a chance. I will be recommending it to some of my friends playing on steam. However, I will keep playing on steam when I feel like a casual game when I don't want to concentrate quite so hard :D .

For the most part steam is friendly, with better players helping the noobs out with advice. I think its really the place to be for fun and casual games of FA. But as Cas said, steam has its share of assholes to. There are groups of players who only play on the same team, talk down to every one and abuse game imbalances to destroy noobs, presumingly to reassure themselves that they are “pros”, and are very sore losers.

Forgive and grammar/punctuation mistakes, its late and I’ve had a bad case of dyslexia for the last 20yrs or so  .
Hey AJ glad to hear you are having fun with FAF, agree with your comments entirely.

in faf you have to learn to balance your economy and how to reclaim mass. therefore you become a better player.
when you play in steam again, you maybe will beat the "pros" there and they will watch the replays and learn from you.

this way the gap between the two communities will shrink and it will become easier for steam players to switch to faf...
all we have to do is to tell them that faf exists and that there is a blackops/phantom mod, new shaders, many new maps (thermo, ...) and even 6v6 gameplay.

- Join the group, look at your steam friend list, and invite everyone that own FA.

- Play nicely with steam guys (don't even mention FAF, don't abuse imbalances,....), and you will be able to invite them to the group after a good game, that's would be a good entry point.

I actually just put in my CD Keys into steam yesterday and now can play on steam too. I was just thinking about this exact thing and will try to politely coerce them into FAF if they so desire.

THIS.

Don't be jerks, don't push FAF. Play well, start with a GL, HF, end with a GG, if they seem like nice people then mention that FAF has featured mod support and a much bigger community.
Steam has its assholes too, and the better players abuse the patch imbalance to the max. I have tried to tell them that they will kill their own community by playing that way but of course they won't listen.

I would say that people from Steam do accept FAF players, I have met some truly awesome people on Steam (most on FAF now) but like anything we have to be mindful of the arrogance issue.

Nothing fulfils me more than helping someone new learn something that helps their game, that happens alot on Steam.

Go play on Steam if you so wish, just be nice and embrace their community (it is theirs afterall)

Casimus wrote:Not even mentioning the Smurf problem.

People keep referring to that, even I don't see a lot of smurf, in fact probably way less than GPG. So why are you saying that ?

About people playing rude, it's not tolerated and that's why we have moderators.
Also, yes, don't play seton why random people. Most of the d*** are there :)

About rating, if you don't care, why do you care ? :) People who say they don't care probably always do :)

If steam player don't care about the massive imbalance of 3603 (just spam cybran T2 ghetto gunship -they stun flak- and win anything), I don't really think you can change their mind about FAF.

I think they are well aware of what FAF can offer, they just don't want to be involved too much in the game.

I think the smurfing issue has improved but unlike GPG it is impossible to track someone, for example you are of course aware of Playertrack, one of its features was to include details of their IP so very easy to detect a good person smurfing.

I won't hammer on about smurfing it's an old argument and perhaps only a very small factor in the scheme of this conversation.

Rating is a major problem its not about the people that dont care its about the people that do!! For example back when I had all day to mess around playing games every lobby would be crazy stacked one way or another. For me to play I had to accept that..

1) Im gonna get bashed or....
2) Its a humping

Im afraid to say 90% of the better players on FAF want to win at all costs, and will stack to suit. I agree with Dilli that many of the problems relate to the Setons community in particular shame that I was one of the very few who didn't follow suit in that group of people.

As for "people being rude" or assholes to shorten things, they are everywhere. If I sent you a PM every time someone was rude or abusive back when I was playing you would have got sick of hearing from me.

My point on that arguement is this. If I go out in life to a place full of assholes I just don't go back, I don't moan I just don't bother. It's nothing against the mods, but why moan? I have moaned once or twice to mods in the past and nothing happened (not that I care).

Just to finish I would say this, I have pointed many a Steam player towards FAF, some love it and stay, others don't and go back to Steam. Many of the new players you have came from Steam. FAF has much to offer the competive gamer from a Steam perspective whereas Steam is much better for Casual gaming (apart from the shitty balance).

Don't take things as a dig FAF is far more popular than Steam and people vote with their virtual feet.

Peace

Cas x

cause it is a noob move, even for mid player it is much faster to transport yourself :D
i have played few setons 3603 beta with decent players (little bit less level then Raging squirell)
and all plaers just making air 1rts and transpot, and fly to the mid...
then they try make walled pds, then some one blows up with 50000 damage to reclaim wrecks, and no reclaim left...
