By choosing that value for the rating, you can be 99% sure that the player will AT LEAST perform at that level, probably better.

By taking the mean only, it can perform at a waaaay more lower level that what is displayed. That won't happen with the current system.

The mean is NOT a good way to compare players, as they have 66% chances to perform at -/+ their deviation (usually, that range is 400 points).
ie. A player with a mean of 1700 has 66% chances to perform between 1600 and 1800.
but he has 99% chances to perform better than 1400.

Also, you don't need the number of games to get a grasp of the deviation : if the rating is dark, the deviation is high (not reliable rating, hard to read). If it's white, it's low.

Again, all this is in the wiki.

But since the games played number is shown next to the rating, players can see also indirectly that the deviation is low if someone has 300 games and 1600 rating. and that the deviation is quite high if he has only 10 games ...

The point why I'm asking is... if one would show only the mean rating and not "mean - 3*deviation" two things would be possible.

1.) Players can see the exact mean rating of the player (better comparable to other players) - ofc only if they have played more than 30 games.
2.) new players will be shown with a 1500 rating which means smurfs have it hard to bash noobs (who not know the meanings of trueskill) - they would see ... wow ZERO games and 1500 points - kick him!!! ;)

but maybe this is bullshit :-p I don't know ... think about it if you want! ;)

I'm rated 1318/1469 at the moment, and I'm #740 on the global list. How can 1500 be the mean average when there are over 4000 players below me?

Read my previous message, the wiki, and search "normal distribution" in wikipedia.

The real average is 1436.
Right click on your nickname, check the "mean" value, you will now if you are better or worst than the average.

The "displayed" average is 208, but again it has no real meaning. But you can guess that the average standard deviation is 400. Meaning that most of the players have less than 5 games played, that's too few to make a solid estimation of their skill.

Ok, thanks guys. Using the calculation of PlasmaWolf with slightly lower averages taken I get an average of ~860. Is there maybe a way I could get a raw textdump of the leaderboards with the ratings? Then I could actually calculate it.

the values displayed in the leaderboards are not your rating

Now, remember that the displayed is mean - 3*deviation.
Read the wiki for more info about that.
Right click or a nickname - View statistics to get the real values of your rating.

but what is with the players which didnt play for a long time? Are they still counted in the elo system?

maybe the period of time for the elo calculation should be only a few month...
