Also msconfig.exe - this is a utility built into Windows that controls what loads on startup. Click the run bar and type msconfig, then press enter. Go to the services tab and disable anything that looks like it's unnecessary, then go to the startup tab and do the same. Apple, Adobe, Googleupdate are amongst the biggest offenders, but basically you want to uncheck everything that you don't need to start when the computer starts, which is pretty much everything.
