for at least 6 months now I have trouble installing FaF updates. Once I succeed at successfully installing an update, FaF runs perfectly stable until it is time for the next update. Here's where I have gotten stuck:
- blue screen while running the installer
- blue screen while launching FaF after successful installation
- after a blue screen, the desktop icon for FaF is often broken (no more target or icon).
- after successful installation, I might be able to launch FaF successfully indefinitely until the next update
- after successful installation with or without blue screens, on launching FaF I might get the following persistent error (this is where I am at the moment, after a blue screen while launching FaF from the completed installer window and a reboot):
- Code:
[auto] Crash from pre-login: list index out of range
**FAF Username:** pre-login
**FAF Version:** undefined
**FAF Directory:** C:\ProgramData\FAForever
**FA Path:** C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance
**Home Directory:** C:\Users\Bart\Documents
**Stacktrace:**
{{{
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "main.py", line 111, in <module>
File "main.py", line 73, in runFAF
File "client\__init__.pyc", line 35, in <module>
IndexError: list index out of range
}}}
To resolve this problem I have attempted the following, none of which I've found to work or be necessary:
- uninstall FaF using the windows uninstaller or a 3rd party 'complete uninstallation' product
- removing all Windows registry entries containing the words 'forged alliance forever'
- installing to a different directory in Program Files (x86), e.g. 'Forged Alliance Forever 2'
- deleting the Forged Alliance Directory in Program Files (x86) prior to installation
- disabling my virus scanner during installation
- removing all maps from C:\Users\Bart\Documents\My Games\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\maps before launching FaF, which I tried because a similar 'list index out of range' error was reported in viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2070
- removing all maps and mods from C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance
Going through the installation process again and again until somehow it succeeds is the only remedy I've found to work so far.
I'm running Windows 7 and successfully ran and updated FaF for several months before this problem started occurring at every update. I would be happy to assist in tracking down its cause or learn how to uninstall FaF completely (including all settings, files and registry entries) to see if a clean installation resolves the problem.
Thank you,
