Why does GAZ_UI interfere?

Gaz is intergrated in faf, it's not in steam so you use it as a UI mod.

I also read about an issue with having previously selected a color on FAF that isn't on steam causing problems, is this true?

This is true. Before playing on steam ,select the blue colour in faf and start a game. This corresponds to purple in steam and will prevent the issue

My original question has not been answered yet, however: Can I install FAF for my steam install and still play steam multiplayer, or do I NEED to install retail FA as well?

Installing faf will not affect your steam install. At all. So you can use both concurrently.

You should have no issues playing on faf and steam concurrently, aside from if you use gaz_ui /hotbuild.

This however I believe can be solved by swapping out the folders for those mods when you play on faf and putting them back when on steam.

Mine is not based on the Steam version. I installed FAF back then when GPG was still running.
I am not sure if the game has two different game.prefs when using it in combination of Steam and FAF.
You could get some problems if it does use only one game.prefs if you have hotbuild or GAZ_UI installed and maybe an other mod that I might miss right now.
Else you should not get any problems because FAF creates an extra folder with it's own version of FA. At least it does that for the 3599 Version so I am pretty sure it will do that for the Steam Version too.

If I install FAF for Steam, will I lose the ability to play on the steam matchmaking? Is there any way to avoid this problem? I can install my FA retail copy if I need to, but would the settings or anything between those 2 installations conflict? I assume I wouldn't need to install GPGnet.
