There is a very simple way to see it: Build one strat defense, and make a template consisting only of it. When you attempt to build this "template", you will only be able to place it every two "spaces" on the map. Also, if you hold down the placement button (left-click) and drag the template, it will be very strangley spaced; the strat defenses (i.e. template) will alternate between 2 and 4 spaces apart, meaning they will either overlap or be placed one additional space away.

I believe this issue is due to coding involving templates which assumes they have even dimensions, e.g. a t1 pgen is 2x2, a t3 pgen is 8x8, etc. Afaik the strategic defense is the only structure with odd dimensions (3x3).

So, the first problem is not as serious as I had originally thought. The second problem remains an annoyance but does not make templates function incorrectly.

Since Patch 3641 came out, I remade a template I often use. Now, however, several of the buildings later in the template are not placed next to the pgens; these structures, in addition to several T2/T3 AA, can only be built +/- one space away, instead of 0 spaces away, from my template. It feels similar to the inability to place a T1 PD or Wall Section adjacent to larger structures (say, a T1 pgen), except this now happens at twice the size. When I try to build the template, "small" mouse moves allow me to build +/- one space away in every direction. When the positioning is -1 space away, i.e. possibly overlapping with another structure in the template, it will nonetheless appear green (once the template is placed, this building disappears from the queue immediately - it is probably this building because it is later in the build queue).

I've tried creating a template intentionally placing these buildings exactly 1 space away, hoping I could then make a small mouse move and realign them, but when I do this the template then works perfectly (and skewed).

It makes including these structures in a template essentially useless; as a simple example, for a template of a Strat Defense, a few T3 Pgens, and another Strat Defense, the second Strat Defense is skewed. Since I overwrote my previous template after I'd laid down the structures, I can't even return to the template that had previously worked fine. The template had also worked fine in 3641/3642 until I replaced it.

Since I'm noting this, I'll also point out that even prior to 3641/3642, templates have a peculiar persistence. For example, if I have a template loaded and I'm searching for somewhere to place it, i.e. the only remaining action necessary is to left-click, and then instead of left-clicking the template I press "B,3,B" to change to building T3 structures and use a hotkey, it will still keep the template. Even after deselecting the unit and selecting again, the pressing "B,3", all the structures are the templates. The only way to actually build a T3 structure at that point is to click the image on the bottom UI, i.e. pretend as if hotkeys don't exist.

Finally, and again prior to 3641/3642, sometimes when I've "escaped" from having to build template structures instead of the desired tech level, the image of the structure will be properly sized but contain the first structure I wanted to build in the template. For example, if I were building a shield and had just had persistence of a build template which began with a T3 pgen, the dimensions will be correct (and it will be built correctly) but the image before executing will be a shrunken T3 Pgen.
