you can use your product key from the retail DVD to get a free copy of FA on steam
once you have that you can link your faf acc to steam

alternatively tell your friend to pm an admin or moderator with the name of his faf and steam acc so someone can take a look

How can I unlink my FAF account/computer from Steam?

I let a friend use my computer at the last LAN party, and he must have linked it to steam. Now when I login with my account it says I have to be linked to steam, but I don't own SupCom/FA on steam.
