I'm making an educated guess here, but I think you might have the same problem I discovered a while back, as the symptoms look similar.
Made a topic about it then http://forums.faforever.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15129.

Devs looked into it then and found the problem.
They included a fix for it in the current FAF version 0.16.1 RC2.

Have you tried this? :

You'll have to edit your desktop shortcut to FAF client and add
' --qt-angle-workaround' at the end of the target program if you have issues
with freezing client tabs.

Alternatively, release 0.16.1 RC1 should have that fix automatically applied, so you could try installing that one from https://github.com/FAForever/client/releases

Faf client

So for some reason since a couple of patches ago my faf client gets fucked which is why i'm stuck using an old version without fancy autojoin channels.

Sometimes everything seems fine but then somehow a lot of functions stop working:
- Hovering over the box that shows rating won't create a popup
- Hovering over games in the play tab won't create a popup that shows players
- When i alttab into faf it shows some weird flickering.
- The options in the top right don't work anymore, clicking does nothing.
- Window freeze until i alttab and get back in.
- etc etc.
