So, just leave default hard drive and directories when installing Steam/FA/FAF.

Solution : re-install Steam, FA and FAF leaving the default directories and hard drive!

Launching FA : no sound on cinematics. Exitint the game without launching one, cannot go back to Desktop. As always.
Then I started FAF, hosted a game on Twin Rivers, 1v1 versus AI.
I stayed for ~20mn before ending the game. No crash during this 20mn, and I had the "Commander under attack" sound. I'll try in a real game to see if this is the same.

But, when quitting the game, it crashes (unhandled exception...).

Here are the logs. Several sound issues apparently.

I don't see what my network/internet connection as to do with it.

As for the install: take a new hardware config, install a legal Win 8.1 64bit from scratch, install Steam, download FA, install FAF: not working with sound (but work in no sound - ie all playback devices disabled) - speakers are in stereo).

Note that I have sound issue as if I was in surround, while I'm not (speakers in playback devices tab are configured in stereo).

Just tried with nVidia sound disabled, doesn't change anything.

Your install method or software.
Your network, internal or ISP.

Could it be the GPU drivers causing this (as they can also carry sound)? I don't see a way to disable that to check.

I have 3 PC at home:

1) old PC with an Intel C2D @3Ghz, 8GB RAM, Asus P5NE-SLI motherboard and a GFX 460 or 480 (don't really remember). I'm running Win 8.1 64bit on it, with Avira and Comodo as anti-virus and FW.

This PC works without issue with FA/FAF, out of the box, a total no brainer.

2) recent PC with an Intel i7 4770K, 16GB RAM, GFX 770 can't really remember top off my head the motherboard, but the integrated audio chipset is Realtek ALC892. Win 8.1 Pro 64bit, with same AV and FW. This PC also have an external USB audio card (PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL) for my guitars.

FA/FAF will ALWAYS crash on exit, even if I didn't run a game. Need to Ctrl-Alt-Del -> task manager -> kill SupCom process.
FA/FAF will always crash (freeze) in game at some random point in time. Can be after 5mn or 20mn. So I may finish a game without crashing in-game if I'm quick enough, but will crash when exiting to Desktop.

If I disable all speakers (right-click on the speaker icon, playback, disable everything), I obviously have no sound and the game NEVER crashes. Everything is working fine.

If I only use the USB sound card: crashes
If I only use Realtek chip: crashes

I have the speakers set to stereo, no FX.

I tried several Realtek drivers, same story.
Reinstalled DirectX (11.0 btw), same story.

3) brand new PC, Intel i5 4690K, Gigabyte Z97 motherboard with Realtel audio chipset ALC887, GFX 670, 8GB RAM, Win 8.1 64bit, same AV and FW. Fresh install of system and FA/FAF.

Same story than config #2.

Note: for config #2 and #3, most replays will work without crashing with sound on (say 80%). But I crash on exit.

Edit: Need to add, since I have changed all my audio settings to try to fix that, now I'm missing sounds (voice annoucement "nuke", sound of the intro when lauching FA directly...). So there's something with the sound that needs to be done, but what?

What can I do?

I disabled all my sound devices. I can launch and quit normally.

So, how to make sure Windows is in stereo? Right-click on the speaker, reading device, I see stereo. Guess this is not there...

Then, recently, I ordered a brand new config, high-end, for him (and maybe a bit for myself as well :)):

- i5 4690K
- GFX 970
- SSD
- 8GB RAM
- Win 8.1 64Bits

PC freshly installed and... exactly the same issue.

I launch the game, even without starting a game, I quit, I never come back to the desktop (grey screen), I need to kill the process through task manager.
I tried to play one game, everything froze after some time, task manager, kill process.

I have always a memory access violation issue.

I'm wondering if that game simply works with recent hardware. Am I the only one with such CPU, GPU????

- still no solution game always crashing on exit (even if no game played): need to bring up the process manager to terminate FA, which is hard to do as the screen is not handed back by the game.
- game crashing at some random points
- I can play without issue on an older PC (also running Windows 8.1)
- I can see my replay on the new PC without crashing (except when exiting the game)

deleting the game.prefs file, I was able to have a ranked game without an issue, and made it to the score screen. Exiting it made the game crash, "as normal".
resolution was 1024x768 I believe (not very easy to use for game).
I really suspect something related to the GPU / screen resolution / refresh rate.

If you're feeling bored you can put memtest86 on an USB-stick and let it run overnight.
http://www.memtest86.com/

But if it was a general memory issue you would probably have unstable programs overall.
