Because back then religion wasn't that ingrained. Even the Republican Party leader in the US warned against becoming an overly religious country.

In time, that changed and the more hard core religious groups got a bigger voice (I blame the internet).

I don't think peace will ever be achieved while anyone can wake up in the morning, and in 20 minutes have a functioning nuke ready to fire.

on a side note, how did that song get so popular? The first words of his song was him basically saying religion is destroying the world.
