Variety don't necessarily mean "packing a lot of objects till map is unreadable". It's more of a "different tilesets to choose from. And in this matter I totally agree that "Maps more like other planets" is the thing that would be nice to have :D

Something else: Try the map "Loki". A map with better design than virtually anything else, and it has a pretty good city. In terms of superior design, there's also the map "Forest Planet FA" (I think searching for Forest planet is good enough in the FAF vault)

2. No, varied never equals better by definition. There are some eccentric or exotic maps in the vault, such as Aparture Laboratories, but they don't add to the general quality of the game. Also, if you're going to make a very varied map, you're going to end up with a weird mess 90% of the time. Adding variation means adding complexity and that never means that you add quality. It could add quality, but you can never guarantee it.

Show me the map witch such quality and details then...
Because as of now I can't find any map that isn't completely empty. No settlements, no small towns no nothing...

P.S. Varied = Better, by the very definition. Take it from the player that plays MOBA games (same map over and over again... "puke" ...it's a nightmare).

Anyway, there are no real urban textures and if you're going to add a true urban environment, the problem is not necessarily the lack of urban textures, but the lack of urban structures.

The supcom2 maps may be more varied, but I don't think they look better.

For the record all the maps I've seen so far are either:
- Sand (yellow, orange, red),
- Rocks (brown, grey),
- Grass (light, dark),
- Snow,
- Something slimy-rocky witch green-black tint (minority - I've only seen 1 custom map like this and few official maps),

Not much of a variety to be honest. No matter how much different of a game SupCom2 is - his maps look much better and are far more varied...

It's most awesome and detailed map I ever seen official or custom :D

Now the FA do not have any more edge, I do not know what it is to put in place, very strange, only changes color according faction...

If you could go back to what it was before. Would be excellent in the Galactic War, a suggestion is maybe in the future in FA Forever ...

I found a map that fits the type I was looking for:
Link download: http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/supremecommanderforgedalliance/map/24904.html or Map Vault :?

its maybe not an alien planet but imo a good example for very good mapping and the possibilities for the map editor

aaand i just found that there are textures that do really look like floating lava

i think there was something about lightning before and somebody said that it would be difficult to have more than one lightsource (or impossible i dont remember anymore)
multiple lightsources would be cool when for example shots enlight then ground or units enlight dark maps like Vagra Pass

SupCom engine supports creativity i see no reason why rain shouldnt be possible to be made work like some fake units, better question is what this would do with the performance

The source files actually support Things like Rain and even Snow.
Its a bit tricky to get it working and looking nice while fitting the entire map without having a shitload of impenetrable clouds all over the places.

I was working on that a while ago and got some nice Snow and Rain effects - infact it only where visible effects. I should have this stuff somewhere (I did that for a map, but especially as I never had a good idea for the layout, I somehow dropped the coin on that).

It would make things easyer if we could edit some files in one of the .scd archives (which actually should be doable - I hope?). I think multiple particles falling from the sky should be doable. Not sure if we get some lightning done. I think I'll take another look upon this :)

Edit: I found an old screenshot I made for light snow with thin clouds. (yes, it dont fit the map type, but hey, it gives a good contrast)
