Ranked map pool - Vanilla map in.

Postby Ze_PilOt » 18 Apr 2012, 08:51

The map pool will change soon. 5 vanilla maps, 5 customs maps.
Some maps will go, some maps will stay, you decide.

Every 3 months, a new pool will be done and 4 maps (2 vanilla, 2 customs) will be changed. The maps introduced by the previous pool will not be changed.

The vanilla maps are currently :
Theta Passage
Ranaoke Abyss
Blasted Rock

The vote is limited to 10. If you want a map not listed, please answer directly in the thread.

A bit off topic...

I've heard talk about how Starcraft competitive maps in korean esport leagues were incredibly finely tuned masterpieces of gameplay and stuff. (were korean esport SC maps fan-made or official?)

Do people have an understanding on what makes a good competitive map in SCFA, and how do the original official maps stack up to that standard? Are there any fan-made maps that really hit the sweet spot?

Starcraft map follow a basic set of rules (ramp to the main, easy to secure second etc.) and allow for verry refined play by the korean pros (who are playing broodwar for 10 years now). the variety of the maps in SupCom is by far greater. Plus SupCom has much stronger imbalances and no refined gameplay, not even close.

Build orders go to 1 Fac 2 pgens 2 Mex and from there on out its open most of the times, maybe have a plan what you want to do (4Fac +tec is my new fav). At least thats how i play and i know Zock plays.

OP is imo one of the best SupCom maps that features alot of what makes Supcom fun to play (macro and unit positioning) and also neglects the OPnes of some units by allowing to tech quite easily to get the proper respond.

If you think about canis: would be great map if auroras couldnt hover over the water.

The less OPnes a faction get from a map the better. EotS for instance just asks to be played with seraphim. Canis and Finns are Aeonplayground. Haven is pretty hard to play as UEF and Cyb vs Aeon. I think you get the point.

Some maps are more refined than others, haven for example, in my opinion is broken. One must go bomber first to have any chance so you can bomb the oppositions reclaim. I dont think that strats are any less developed in supcom V starcraft, supcom just has so many ways to win, many more counters far more units and even more strats yet to be developed. Its nice to have macro maps but frozen isis is just too long. There is no mass to draw the commanders out so it just becomes a tech race to build the biggest baddest thing as fast as possible and build counters to said baddies.
I like palms since its a classic, it has all the requirements for great game play including limited chokes or artificially created chokes, micro, macro, raiding and air.
Theta has long established itself as the defacto standard for micro but moonshine has proudly taken the torch and possibly has better gameplay.

I do not totally agree with you toe :
About Heaven Reef, if you "cancel" this needed bombing reclaim opening, the mapitself is absolutly excellent, and requieres some faces of the gameplay that we don't use to see.

We often try to compare our situation to Starcraft one : But on the starcraft ladder, maps are never perfect on the first time. They often have to modify some cliffs, or little settings to make the map optimised for the gameplay.
Wouldn't it be possible just to move, or withdraw this little reclaims, if it can make the map more interesting?

And i suppose you wanted to say moonlight instead of moonshine?!moonshine is the biggest joke ever imo.
Finally i agree about the quality of Open Palms.
