Regarding the new rules

Postby jediflamaster » 05 Aug 2018, 12:37

Since this is rather important for me personally, I'd like to know if telling someone to get back in the kitchen/calling them a faggot/ginger/etc. over their proficiency at the game or personal conduct will still be conflated with actual harassment and/or discrimination.
"- Do not harass, defame, or discriminate other players on their sexual orientation, gender, race, culture, religion, nationality." <-rule in question.

Yes, at least as far as I'm concerned they will be.
Now if you're talking personally, I may let you know that the actions and/or insults you were banned for the last time are still forbidden in the current rules. Acting the same again will get you to the same results than before.

Well, in this case, wouldn't it make more sense to add another rule which explicitly states that insulting people is a bannable offense? That way people who understand the difference between actual harassment/discrimination and shittalking someone won't get confused.

Quoting the rules :
-Respecting other community members is important. You will always respect your fellow community members. You will not harass or attack other users. You will respect the rights of other users to have their own opinions. Failing to do so will result in sanctions.

-You agree, through your use of FAF services, that you will not communicate any material that is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, hateful, harassing, derogatory to someone’s sexual orientation, race, culture, religion, threatening, invasive of a person’s privacy or other in violation of any law.

What you quoted here in this post is the overview, which is, as indicated at the beggining of the section, :
This is a short overview of the rules. For any moderating purpose, only the complete rules will be taken in account : this summary is for your information only.

Please proceed with reading the rules in their entirety and only then to suggest improvements and/or modification.

Hey neat, I must be a dumb piece of shit fucking retard to have missed that. For the record I have read the stuff below the summary, but this particular point has somehow eluded me. I'm still surprised you'd omit something this draconian in the summary, but yeah, forget I said anything. Thanks for your time.

This is a community project run by volunteers. Most legal systems in the world see "insulting people" as a bannable offense. Society agrees that insulting people is a bannable offense. If that isn't obvious to you than I don't think anyone cares about you being a part of the community. We don't have to state the rules beforehand anyways. We're trying to make everything transparent/democratic and that often leads to very long slack/forums discussions but as we're all volunteers this will never be perfect. If you want to you will always spot a loophole in the rules.

You have no right to use this service. It is provided to you free of charge. So just use common sense and everyone will have fun.

Yes it's true, and I would add that this being a "gaming community" doesn't make insulting/offensive talk more suitable or allowed in anyway than in any other community.

"Most legal systems in the world see "insulting people" as a bannable offense" yeah right. I don't know what kind of dystopia you live in, but where I from there are no legal consequences for calling someone names, and people get along just fine. Appealing to authority or popularity does nothing to justify your stance.
I'm not trying to pretend I have any say in how FaF runs this party, nor am I trying to get my ban lifted. I'm not pretending I'm entitled to anything. Considering what I've seen so far I wouldn't be particularly surprised if I was permed for this thread (it would be amazingly ironic, though). If anything, I'm happy FaF staff at last have some reference to go to when moderating so that hopefully atrocities like my first ban never happen again.
If you're really this confused as to what disgusts me about game chat moderation, it's that it runs completely counter to the spirit of competition. I can't even count on people to shittalk me properly when I f*** up and it's infuriating. I can't properly shittalk people when they f*** up either. Losers need to be shamed so they may stop being weak. If they can't handle the simple reality of their inferiority, they are free to shelter themselves with the mute option and stay in their imaginary kindergarten. Letting those people have the power to extend their disgusting kindergarten to the entirety of the community gives me nausea. Not to mention half of the time they don't apply their speech standards to themselves, but rarely suffer consequences because people who don't have the mentality of a 5 year old won't run crying to a mod about someone calling them out on their shit.
But yeah, as I said, I don't own this party, so I have no say in how the mods run it. This thread was more about consistency (which I sincerely believe FaF staff strives for), because that used to be a problem in the past, and introducing a set of rules is a great way to combat that. I'm not happy that the chat is policed, but I'm sure it's better for everyone if it's clearly stated that it is.
