CPU & Latency

Postby Casimus » 07 Aug 2012, 16:27

Hi,

Whilst im on the forums another point I would like to discuss/make suggestions for. For those of us that like to play on the larger maps sometimes the game is ruined by poor latency and or CPU speed.

Is there any way it would be possible to not only diplay each persons latency in relation to others in the lobby but their CPU speed and or suitability for the map, I forever host FAST CPU only and it fills with people with slow CPUs.

Now this topic isnt meant for people to bash one anothers PC in fact whenever the subject is raised it does seem to offend the individual with the poor CPU/Lag problems. Some of us have better PCs than others but surely there is a way for us to better understand if someone is suitable to play on a larger map.

Another possible suggestion is that if someone reaches -4 in a game for a period of time there is the option to kick by teammates.....

I know this is a sensitive subject but I would be interested to know what people think and possible solutions....

I remember in SupCom 2 lobby there is a Button (for Host only) which simulates the Network load of in-game.
This doesnt include the Sim-Speed of course.

I dont know how much Effort it takes to send "worthless" Datas between the players, but I think the Lobby-crashes should be fixed first of all, before increase the Buttons in there (even if its getting better the last time, as I got the impression)´.

The simspeed is even easier to measure. it depends on the processor speed and not on the number of cores. A simple
for (i = 0; i < 1000000000; ++i) { }
would give a data point that has likely a good correlation with sim speed. That measurement can be passed on to FA and displayed in the lobby.

i experienced a single crash since the last patch. In an empty lobby while changing the map. Not really an issue.

I alsoo thought about displaying this, but I think it will lead to insulting other players with slow cpu... and that is never good.

It is not always clear what is meant by FAST CPU in the title.. maybe a little more specifying can help?

I have dual core 3.0 Ghz and I honestly don't know if that is maybe causing problems later in the game...

It would be nice with some kind of information what is required for some games or if its possible to get this information in-game, just for the purpose of knowing if there is a problem with the setup. As for myself sometimes i am afraid to join certain games just because i dont know if i will slow it down.

As for processor i got a core 2 duo at 2.4Ghz but i have no clue if i am the bad seed when playing setons :-(

ren_shownetworkstats will show you the sim speed of each players. It starts getting bad at -2.

Zep could there be a way of you implementing for a future patch some kind of CPU display for the lobby? I appreciate its probably not high on your list of priorities but I think it would be a real help to avoid laggy games.

The obvious solution is that everyone buys a better PC, its a real shame as there are some very good players I would love to play more with but I won't because the lag spoils things.

Some way of knowing before we start would be immense I lose track of how many times I have quit because the game got to -4 and even some times -5 and the lagger wont quit.

Again, a very constructive message from V.

Care to explain, or we can assume that you just want to troll on every post possible and we can skip directly to the forum ban ?

You're a dev, my wild guess is that you know already why ;)

But I will admit i tend to get a bit touchy when the subject is to exclude players. For a community that is supposed to be one, I see a lot of discrimination because of the very system of the rating on faf. Just sayin' and I'd hate to see another factor added on top on that
