Live Replays?

Could someone please tell me what a live replay is? It seems to me that the very name is a contradiction. Is it just like joining the game as an observer? I've tried a couple and they seem to start right at the beginning, surely if you were joining as an observer it would be part way through the game most times you joined?

It's exactly what the name means : A replay of a game currrently played.

So how is it different to joining as an observer? And have I just been lucky by finding ones that start at the beginning?

It's a replay. Think of it like a VOD. You don't join as an observer, it's a replay like any other. The only difference is that it's written while you are watching it.

Okay then how is it possible for there to be more live replays than games currently active then?

When you click on a live replay you are starting the replay from the start of the game. You can speed up the game to real time point of the running game (minus 60 seconds to prevent ghosting).

I suspect there are more replays than games because a game might end, but the replay is still available for some time.

It's not. All the livereplays are the games that are currently played.

What you see in the "find games" tabs are the games that are not in play yet, no livereplay either.
