Watching replays - Observation, realization...

What player had the biggest influence on you as you learned the game?
While watching replays what was one thing you saw that had a big impact on your game?
What did you realize about the game that allowed you to see more in the replays?

In any competitive game watching replays is an essential part of learning, whether you are just starting or have played since vanilla. Indeed those of us who went away for a few months then came back quickly realized that we were way behind, not because we forgot our builds, but because the game has changed, optimized by the leading players, whose gameplay was quickly adopted by the replay watching community.
Having grown up on Seton's Clutch my favorite player to watch had been Character(before he tried to quit, which really had a bad effect on his gameplay). Watching him play the rock spot with cybran was a great learning experience, especially seeing how he would maximize build capacity on his power production, using early reclaim for mass. This realization opened up the space of possible build orders dramatically. Early reclaim means you can move mass extractors further into your build, which in turn opens you up to many possibilities, getting earlier air, getting earlier t2 mass extractors, getting earlier T2 navy, etc.
Watching character made watching other players on other maps much more productive. The first thing to look for now, is what engineer from the initial factory goes to what piece of reclaim on the map.

I think this is going to be fun

What player had the biggest influence on you as you learned the game?

at first a player you all do not know anymore (Raisayex)
within the "new aera" on FAF
ZBinden

While watching replays what was one thing you saw that had a big impact on your game?

There were too many to pick out one, but i was looking tons ofn replays from eXivo in old GPGnet times.. no idea why

What did you realize about the game that allowed you to see more in the replays?

That you should not seek for your own mistakes, but for the ones of you enemy cause':
they are more easy to spot
you can abuse them more easy than improve your own ones
at least
unitil
a point
somewhere between 1800-1900

Good idea, I had never looked at it that way  I will have to keep this in mind next time I review a replay.

Truth be told, I only these days watch replays of other ladder players to learn the openings. Knowing their early raids really is most of the work.

God, players who influenced me? That's a tough one, I don't think anyone would remember any of them, but the old school TFU crew were my biggest influence (although I'm sure you all remember TLO).

fireraptor tought me the game. i played many 1v1 vs him and we talked about the tactics and strategies after. such basics as too many pgs build, idle acu is fail, start bo is very important and depends on the map, radar coverage important etc. it is such a pitty he doesnt play anymore fa. :(

big impact on replays - win the battlefield and u win the game. means, win the areas where the battle was and reclaim all mass there to outproduce and overrun ur opponent.

unit production and eco goes hand in hand as build power and eco. if u accomplish the perfect balance between those u have a good chance to win the game. huge eco with no build power is lose. so get the right build power at any stage of the game + tech ur mexes when the time is right. so in reps, i watch at the build capacity, time when they tech their mex - ofc i watch their radar coverage and unit of choice in what situation. but as i have more problems with build power and eco i have my eye on this topic.

Sir_Loui was the best player for quite a long time. I always learnt the most from observing and adapting build orders of the best players. Understanding the importance of how your build order affects the outcome of a game was one of those big turning points for me.

alot players already left or were quite inactive when i came to gpg, so sadly i have no knowledge of some epic players and their tactics
the players who i really liked to watch were voodoo, uberge3k and deathly in their fight for #1 in the ladder
when i came to faf, i also very much enjoyed watching to zock, isen and funkoff

the player who helped me to grow... for a long time vallex, i learned the whole game together with him, starting with beeing noobs who eco'd up to t3 land on a 5x5 map without building a single t1 tank or scout :D
later, when i was alot better than that, i also trained alot with currysmuggler

The two players that influenced me were:

1) Jason21Alnwick
2) MongMeUpThen

Those guys were always the best, which is why I had to go out and get better so I could beat them.
