Highly controversial thoughts on zooming

Postby Wakke » 22 Jan 2013, 13:10

If you look at a FA game, a lot of time is spent zoomed out. It's becoming a game of icons; hell, we wouldn't remember what units look like if it wasn't for watching replays :D And I think that's kind of a negative point about this game.
I know this will probably get a lot of negative response, but I was thinking: would it be a bad idea to promote zooming in on units, and thus also promoting microing them? For example, when you are zoomed in close enough, all units on screen get a bonus of some sort?

Ok, flame suit on.

For the players it is not a problem,

but it would be nice if spectators could zoom in without losing 'the big picture', but a minimap might in fact be an option that exists for FAF?

It's quite annoying, you are watching one of those nice casts of FeligLight(?), seeing a nice attack, then he zoomes out and one enemy base has vanished. - Or there is a dead experimental somewhere.

What you are stipulating is has been a point of contention since the game came out. More micro is not the solution, however and essentially you already get a bonus from zooming in because you can micro your units which you can't do when zoomed out at all. The best setup is a dual monitor setup with one monitor for the zoomed out view and the other for a flexible view. The monitor with the flexible view should have the minimap enabled so that you can click on the minimap to quickly move around the battlefield. Since it is not possible to have dual monitors all the time, I think having the minimap enabled is the best option so that you can click on it to clickly move between different areas on the battlefield without having to zoom in and out all the time.

I'm afraid I am strongly against this suggestion of making the game more micro intensive and promoting zooming in further. I feel that being zoomed out quite far is an integral part of maximising the information you have available to you.

I love dot wars... It enphatizes strategy cutting off any graphic useless detail. I do agree that spectators may find it a bit boring though.... But I don't care about that !!

The nice thing of dot war is that it makes the game immortal and you don' t feel it's getting old. :)

Play better maybe ?
Cause there's already a lot of shit to micro in this game and good luck to do so zoomed out.

If you think you spend too much time zoomed out, you're not playing well for sure!

Meh, 'tis a mixed bag. But I have no qualms in stating that giving a bonus for zooming in is the worst idea I've heard since putting research trees in supcom2.

I can't imagine playing without a second monitor. Not uncommon to have one monitor zoomed out, the other zoomed in where needed.
