Noob Bashing

Postby Antoninus » 29 Dec 2011, 00:13

I make this argument daily in game and the lobby, but I'd like to formalize it here:

The supcom community is full of an incredible amount of talent, but don't forget that supcom is probably the most technically challenging and one of the most inaccessible of the RTS games currently being played. There is a general culture within the supcom community that unless you are at a relatively high class of skill-level you are not welcome to play it. I think that is wrong and it serves only to deter players from supcom's wonderful experience.

Supcom takes a HUGE amount of time to learn. What's more, the level of play today is so far and away better than the level of play 3 or 4 years ago when EVERYONE was still learning. I'm sure Sir_Louis would be noob-bashed out of most games had he been playing today. (I remember when TheBlueOne first started spamming 20 factories on Open Palms and the world has never been the same since.) Everyone is so fucking good these days that they forget what it took to get there. All of us have been playing the game for going on 5 years. As fewer and fewer players sign-on each day it is going to get harder to find games. Don't bully newer players away because they 'ruined' your game. They will probably never come back. I get bullied plenty in the game and lobby, but I was a day-one vanilla player and have probably spent more time on supcom over the years than anything else in my life. I took about 2 years off because life happened, but supcom was always close to my heart so I came back this summer and yes, I was super rusty.

The community turned really mean in those two years. I don't care what most you assholes think, but a newer player subjected to you people's abuse will take the 'fuck-you-guys' approach and go back to StarCraft. How is that a good thing? Over the years the current players are going to start dropping off the servers so the community is going to either die or need to evolve. That evolution starts with each public display of noob bashing and private personal attack. Those things matter and to many people are hurtful. Would you rather have no games to play than a game with someone still learning? I have a fucking life that doesn't give me a lot of time to play, but I love supcom and have a fucking amazing time with the game so I keep playing it. I was ranked 81 on the 1v1 ladder and used to be in a great clan with many good people. I hope to be playing Forged Alliance FOREVER as well, but a new generation of players has to be fostered.

Please remember how much a niche this game is and stop bashing someone not as good as you. It destroys YOUR future with supcom and on a personal level, it is just plain mean.

Unfortunately you're preaching to the choir here.

That thread is about the FAF rating system (which is also a major contributing factor to the ailing health of the supcom community) but noob bashing is an independent issue.

Yeah, its sad. As much as I can I try to stop that sort of thing in chat but I cant watch for it 24/7. You are right, its a very hard game to master but I will be honest, its really worth it. For a while, you will have to try to stick with games with players of about your own rating and dont take anything pro asshats have to say.

Bad behavior in chat are not tolerated.

I don't mind Maverick, for example (I find him funny), but it will be considered bad behavior once one guy will feel offended.
So, be "rude" at your own risk.

You can PM, with screenshots, if you find something inappropriate.

I completely agree with Antoninus.

I started playing FA a year ago but only recently started playing on FAF.

It is hard to keep playing when your first online game, is a complete fail.
That's bad.

But Maverick's comments on chat and in game are not very motivational. Getting kicked because you have <1000 points isn't exactly the way to learn this awesome game.
And it is not only maverick (he is just the only one who can't stop whining about it).

maybe in every game 2 noobs, one in each team? or 3pro +1noob vs 3pro ? (I know, 7 players are not ideal...just ideas :p)

In my opinion there is not enough info about how to play, or tactics. (if I'am wrong, pls post the site :p)
you can watch replays, but when you don't know where to look it is pointless.

Currently Praisegugleourmaster, on youtube, does great job on learning people how to play.

however :p It is nice to hear there are people who are willing to teach noobs.
