Mentors and mentees needed.

Postby ToejamS » 18 Jan 2012, 13:06

I would like to suggest a mentor/mentee system similar to what we had in gpg when it was really popular. There are a lot of new players and rather than taking months to get to an optimal play level, I believe that with some coaching that time can be greatly reduced.

The system that was used in gpg was that a player that was 200+ points more than someone else was eligible to be their mentor. Anyone interested please put down their names, weather they want to be a mentee or mentor and their ratings. Im not going to jump up and down and push this but if the response is there, lets get it working.

The problem with the default game style is when someone dies, its pretty much good game as all that players recs die with him. Each team is generally as weak as the weakest link. That is a big reason noobs are despised bt average and pro players.

After watching FunkOff and some noob take on Ai, it seems that teaming up with noobs against the computer is a great way to get them to learn. The cheating sorian ai is more than enough to give anyone a challenge so the games should still be interesting. The biggest problem with noobs is that they don't listen. It seems that just getting noobs to listen would solve most of the training problems.
1. Noobs almost never listen to players on the opposing side, because they feel vulnerable and don't want to be tricked into something.
2. Noobs never listen to allies in competitive games, because they feel like they are being blamed for losing.

It seems that the perfect environment for noobs to listen, would be while winning a game and getting advice from an ally. They feel like they are part of a team, and this education that they are getting is just part of strategy that they team is trying to implement at the moment. When they actually see that following their allies instruction works, they feel like some teamwork took place and they were successful in defeating the opponent.

In short: Start hosting games against AI, and bring some noobs with you.

I will try to do this. Maybe we should start a certain game name, under which we can host these games. Something like "the noob train" This way noobs looking for games, will jump into these.

Is there a streamlined voice chat protocol established for FAF games?

1. It might be helpful for noobers to have mentors giving them pointers real time as the mentor observes their game.
2. It'd be nice to automatically have voice-chat enabled during team games like Xbox Live does it. Who wants to code that beast? :P

If you see me on FAF and you want a mentor I would be happy to help as much as I can:

feel free to pm me with replays you want to have watched by me. I dont say i'll watch and comment all of them, but you may give it a try.

teamgames arent that usefull to learn. 1v1 replays are better.

To the pros out there:
for me, the most difficult part of the game is eco management. I watch lots of replays, i can imagine, analyze all possible strategies, but when i'm in the game, i suck at eco (i cannot manage eco and fight at the same time, i have only one slow processor in my head).
So, do you have general advices for eco management? Do you have principles you try to follow in order to optimize it? Ratio you always check, number of factories per mex, time marks by which you know you can upgrade to t2 (on most of maps)? Stuff like that. Or is it all about your feeling and experience of the game?
