What ought be done with the Nomads?

Postby FunkOff » 21 Jan 2012, 23:57

As far as I can tell, nobody has worked on the Nomads since it was integrated into FAF nor is it likely that any work by either the original team or by Brute51/Moritz's team will occur.

Right now, nobody plays nomads because only very few players have the option and it's difficult to find enough players with access to get a game going. I think it's been months since anybody has played a Nomads game.

So, we have a few options:
#1: We can change nothing... and things will stay as they were, with nobody playing Nomads ever.

#2: We can make Nomads a full featured mod and give everybody access to it. With this option, it becomes considerably more likely that people will play Nomads.

#3: We can make it a full featured mod AND allow FAF developers to enhance it, perhaps not adding tons of new content, but at least balancing and bug-fixing what is already there.

Which of these do you like? Do you have a better idea?

Is it ready to be a "featured" mod? Can it not just be made available for people to download and try (and open up the forums here for discussion and information)?

It's also because it would be impossible to run it over gpgnet.

I think it would be ready for playing for everybody, as long as you dont want 100% balanced games. I would not recommend playing them in a normal competitive game, but vs CPUs or Survival maps or fun games theyre fine.

Yet, if we want balancing, we need more players, which only comes if everybode can play them.

I dont know, who actually works at it, but of course they should be asked before you take any steps.

yesterday I met ZJ who was leading the original team, where I was in too, and its funny, cos he didnt play FA for a long time.

Yet you can count the orignal team out. I could do some balance work, and even implement new units, but im not in modeling, texturing or effect-making^^. Im only master of blueprint files :P and some scripting.

I'm pretty sure the decision is up to the original developers, not what the community might want. It is, after all, *their* project.

Alrighty then uber, go and ask them and tell us what they said. :-)

Not necessary.

Even though I feel quite saddened by the direction the new developers took for the mod (e.g. removing lots of things that were intended to break usual patterns like T3 artillery or standardized units on each tech level), I still think that the best decision would be to actually make it available for everyone on FAF, given how small the community is even without such artificial limits.
I wont resume working on them, however I still hope that maybe someone else will try. Releasing their code as open source and yaddayadda... is the only way to allow even the slightest progress.

My point is, if no one can contact the developers, we have no right to release their work as open source or otherwise take over the project. Unless they put it under a license that says otherwise, the work isn't ours, and it isn't the community's - it's theirs.

I dont think you realized that I was the one who originally lead the development of the mod.

I confirm that, ZJ was our leader :P

but the current code is part of brute's team... so you have to ask them too.
