1v1 ranked system workable on a community of this size?

Postby luckyNot » 19 Mar 2012, 23:07

Hi,

I have tried searching for a thread on this topic but not found one.

As a recent mover to FAF I have few games and a rating that has still to settle - there is no way I am in the top 200 players on FAF. Today I found I could get no games all were listed as 'good players only' which I am not, or under 1000 which I am not, so I went to 1v1. Previously I have played 1v1 and been pwned but I learn from the replays (I hope). Today no matches - I have been told that the ranking means I can now play even less people. So here I am 30 mins online, no games :( . That is not good for any community.
What your thoughts and experiences??

I don't think games with AI impact player rating, only AI rating. But, if you can beat an AI, you can look at the AI's rating and see where you stand, and that will give you a rough estimation of your own skill level.

I explained that badly. My current rating,at time of posting, is 1393 and my rank is 199th. IMO I should be around 900 rating.

The point I am trying to make with this post is that anything that reduces the number of games I can play and therefore how quickly I learn cannot be good, can it? How narrow are the 1v1 rank matchings for example? Without an ability to search for pro player 1v1 games it is going to be hard to improve quickly.

What your thoughts?
Am I missing something?

Your rating has nothing to do with your opinion, you are rated 1393 not 900, if it is wrong the system will work it out.

with a rating of almost 1400 you shouldn't have any problem finding custom games and trying to join a <1000 game when you're 400 points over that is not right.

Rating count vs AI.

It's one thing to be matched against players above your rank, it's another to be matched against players you have less than 1% chance winning. The matchmaker is there to avoid these kind of matchup.

So yes, you will maybe find less game to play in 1v1 ladder, but at least they will worth be played :)

SpinDrah - I know my rating has nothing to do with my opinion and it is a side point to the subject of the post in any case. I agree with your points about which games to join too. Which is why I posted this thread i.e. limiting gaming options on a small community is not without implications.

Ze_Pilot - perhaps I was just Not Lucky tonight with regards to games available. Although I would be interested to hear from other members of community regarding their experiences and that is part of the reason for this post

I guess you answered my question in that the FAF direction is for less opportunity to play, but with better quality games. The challenge, from a learning perspective, is that with 16 1v1 maps it is hard to apply some learnings from the last game . This combined with fewer opportunities for games makes learning a slower process IMO (As a thought do you have any stats around peak times/days and concurrent player volumes?).

A challenge system will come in 0.7 :) It'll allow people to play ladder1v1 against anyone they wish (only with consent, of course)
I waited ten years for Supreme Commander (1997-2007)
and have not a single day felt disappointed with it!

I hope its every other game only? 1v1 should have at least some random to it, you should not be able to pick who you play every game, that is what Custom is for.

Unlike Elo, you wouldn't be able to increase your rank a lot that way (at least not much more than your real rank).

We will try to code a limitation per day.
