I don't think anyboody that's too into FAF plays or likes Ashes that much. It's definitely slowly improving with updates and they have a new guy in charge of development. As a result of that balance has got quite a bit better and he has a lot of ideas on further improving it and usability/UI.
Development has slowed down a little because Stardock are releasing a big Galactic Civilizations III expansion but better modding support has been added lately and in a couple of months a Juggernaut (which are something like a T4) will be added to each faction and a new set of campaign missions with an unconfirmed amount of Dreadnoughts and possibly some new units will be added.
The Vulkan API is supposed to be added in a months too. Supposedly it'll be the first game to have all the relevant APIs implemented.
I think the naval expansion is coming early next year, I guess sales will have an effect how fast things are implemented. Stardock are very good for supporting their titles for a long time.
I guess it boils down to what you want out of Ashes. If you want a game that'll use all your PC's resources, never has sim lag, the biggest maps, really good AI (for an RTS) and a great engine you should take a look at it.
If you want the depth and all the different ways FA allows you to play, Ashes isn't there yet.
You should probably take a look again at the end of the year and see how it's progressed and what's upcoming to it.
