I'm sorry, but this is a weak argument.
I watch pro matches, and they do not send scouts to critical mass points before sending their ACU or engineers.
You are suggesting that beginning players should do that for no reason other than the fact that they do not know the maps.
I think you also do not understand how lame it is to just lose the game because you don't know the map.
Say this is your 10th game FAF ever. You manage to get something of an economy running, and your opponent seems to be at your level... this promises to be an exciting match!
You send out your forces out.... aaaaaaaand they're gone. There is a wall of 'neutrals' in the middle of the map!
Your opponent didn't send his forces there, and you lose, suffer a setback, or whatever. - it feels very lame, and it might be very unnecessary.
Also note that in racing games you can see the track before you start the race, and that most RTS games do show this information.
Now, if you are saying this is difficult to implement then that's sad but fine.
But if I were to quickly implement this in a SC2 or WC3 map then I would at the start of the game reveal all neutral bases for 100 milliseconds.
If supreme commander allows triggered reveals of certain map areas for a short while then it should be relatively easy to do this right?
