how does the ranking system actually work?

i am really confused how the system decides how much ranking you get.
sometimes i get 40 ranking while everyone was on my level and another time i get 9 rating while everyone had 300 more rating than me oO.
and one time someone in ny team who had a higher rating than me got more rating than me. either the rating systen is buggy or much much more complicated than i thought.
so can someone maybe explain what factors count for the rating? i thought t is just your rating, the enemies rating and your teammates rating.
