Summary of Ranked Maps

Postby bufo802 » 31 Mar 2014, 18:15

Just started playing FAF a bit and thought I had a (vague) idea of what to do so tried a ranked game. Got caught out completely by the map that appeared, Cluster Freak - at first thought the white was snowy/icy land (didn't look very closely, was caught up with initial build order things) and the terrain isn't that obvious so thought could just go straight across. Saw all my scouts stuck on the edge of the island so then assumed it was water (and lost all the units in a transport which dropped in the wrong place - if it won't fit at the target does it just drop nearby?) before finding out afterwards you couldn't go in it at all.

Is there a simple summary anywhere of the ranked maps? Mainly if there's unusual things such as impassable areas/big bits of reclaim/civilian structures etc. Had a look but couldn't find anything, I know can just look at each map individually but would be nice to know of anything particular to watch out for. Had practised before on smallish mainly land maps against the computer and chose the map preferences to fit that, though didn't end up getting any of them - I suppose the only way of ensuring that is setting up your own custom game.

you can check out the tutorials tab, and there are ladder map presentations which give an overview of how to play many (not all) ladder maps

also you can choose which ladder maps to play with the "select maps" box, checking the maps you want to play will make them more likely to be chosen

cluster freak is a bad map i think :/

otherwise look in the replay vault and search the map name for game on that, and set a minimum rating, so you can watch replays of good players play on maps which arent familiar to you

hope this helps and enjoy your stay here!

crazyrush has only 1 mex spot but once you build it 4 ajcacent ones pop up - mexes expand for the rest of the game

darozas sanctuary and the ditch have nearly infinite reclaim (>100000 mass)

in hardffa you spawn directly next to your opponent but underwater this usually leads to first factory beeing reclaimed very soon after they are finished
after you have similar reclaim like on daroza

moonshine has a central hill wth reclaim and a hydro - you need to build your first factory on it or you will most likely lose

kazam has civilians with PD in the middle but they are not hostile

those are all the maps i can think of that have unique features some others exist that have civilians in the middle or notable reclaim but going through all would take too much time

Thanks Lame and Sako, exactly the sort of quick summary I was looking for. Will check replays when I've got a chance but just wanted to make sure I wasn't caught out again by something particularly unusual.

As a ranked newbie I've been wishing for this as well. Maybe as I gain more experience I can eventually make a thread indexing the basics of each map. :) But input from more experienced players on basic map metas would be invaluable, if anyone feels like sharing. (ex.: on Forbidden Pass, you can cross the river with your ACU and walk right over the impassable-looking ridge where there's a cluster of four mexes)

Also to note on the kazam map. You cannot hide under the middle shields as they let enemy fire through, you can capture the PD and Powergens and shield though to make a very secure mid base.

Crag dunes, has large amounts of reclaim near and around the spawn, as wrecks and rocks.

Fields of thunder has massive amounts of reclaim in the two corners you don't spawn in and the middle.

Desert Arena has insane amounts of reclaim and is usually a rush to grab reclaim, spam units, and point defence creep towards your opponent. 20+ factories spamming t1 is not unusual.

Comet catcher has ZERO reclaim other than the wrecks you make, its a rush to get as many mass extractors as you can and hold them better than your opponent.

Yes, I was told it has none after i asked in chat and was given an explanation i forgot, i think they said it was a TA map and they all have no reclaim. Not even a grain of dust to reclaim until you kill something to reclaim.

Just took a brief look around the map, zero reclaim indeed.
