New Loading Screen - Lore

Postby nine2 » 09 Sep 2014, 17:09

I would like to alter the loading screen to add game lore to it. Basically, whilst you are waiting it shows some stuff about the game. Some possibilities include tips of the day, fan art, statistics from random blueprints, descriptions of maps, upcoming news/events, a short tutorial image on a topic (eg: differences between destroyers / how to kite). Here is a mockup:

For content, my plan is to get different ideas from players via the forums. I would have to collect tips and ideas from players, and I would clean it up so that the English was professional. I think to begin with it would avoid lots of problems if I just decided what goes in or not. I'd try and put everything in but would listen to the community - if it was controversial or if a 2000+ rated player disagreed, I would leave it out. I have ok graphic design skills but if someone good wanted to help out that would be great.

Technically, I've already done a proof of concept that I can do this. I have made my own .dds files and with a few LUA alterations, displayed them over the top of the loading movie, which is pretty much the only challenge. Now I just need to assemble all of the content into a lua file and randomly select from it.

This is a lot of work and I am prepared to do it. I think it would a) help players learn and b) look sweet as and c) help increase awareness of things, say like T3 mobile AA or new maps.

@Ze_Pilot, if I go to all of this work, will you use it? It can only work if it is integrated into faforever (won't work as a mod, because mod load happens after loading screen initialization).

An interesting extension idea is perhaps (not sure) it is possible to display the details of the battle that is loading, which map you are playing on, against who, their rating, your factions, etc. Although I like this idea, perhaps it could be abused (people quitting when they see who they play against) so perhaps it's not good.

Another extension is we could make it more useful as a communication tool by making some things only shown once / or shown until a certain date / etc. To promote things like surveys and tournaments.

This concept could be taken in so many directions, eg: we could display snippets from Lu Xun's history of supcom.

Thanks

I should also say that was my first draft at a mockup. Things would improve as the content types evolved & as people suggested better ways of displaying info

As much as I like the idea, I'm not sure if I will get anything out of it since loading usually only takes a few seconds for me oO

Funny thing is I see the screen a fair bit too because of Australian connection times! Oh and Brazil...

I don't like it, unless you have an option to turn it off. :D

Personally, I think the current loading screen makes the game more immersive, as if your are traveling through the quantum tunnel in your ACU, waiting to arrive at the battlefield.

But the points raised by others about fast loading times are more valid. Unless you test a lot of mods or have a slow hard drive, most people won't be able to appreciate your work. D:
