What do you do during attack?

Galactic War is great, but I have one serious issue with it...

So, what do you do after you attack a planet and there is nobody to defend it? Do you just sit in front of your screen and wait one hour until someone shows up..?

First of all, I want to ask: is it possible to play other FAF games (like matchmaker) when you attack? Several people already told me no, but nobody was 100% sure.
Normally, I play other, not-FA-related games while I wait and there is my second problem: Games like Solitaire and Minesweeper are OK, but whenever I try to run something more advanced (Team Fortress 2), and someone decides to defend a planet while Im shooting people, FA is doing weird things (error messages and FAF crashes).

Currently, this is the only thing that prevents me from playing GW. After I log into FAF, I want to play not staring into GW map for an hour and wait.

The rules have changed.

Also you can defend if you don't want to wait.

Just saing that there were isolated territories with planet more then 50% of your faction surrounded by planets with more then 50%
atacking there give you a free win afrer hour (if all surrounding planets stay more then 50% of your faction)

while i was waiting, i were chatting, waching youtube, and talk with other cybrans on mumble, checking forums
also you can play small games or games that you can close fast while FA launches
also you used to able to attack and defend at the same time.
