Windowed mode bug

Postby Fichom » 19 Jul 2015, 00:18

Hello there,

I want to start off with this little fact: I haven't played SupCom since February because of this bug, so yeah, I'm kinda getting agitated here. So what happened?

Back in the February(I might be mistaken on this, but hey, it has been more than 3 months and I can't remember what I had for diner last night) there was this patch that updated the looks of the game Lobby(just to make sure we are clear: the lobby where you pick on which place on the map you want to go, choose your color and faction and spam "x" in chat so the game can finally start). After a week or 2 the update was released, I decided to click on the "Settings" up on the top right corner of the lobby to check what's new. The option that immediately caught my eye was the "Windowed Mode" checkbox. So I clicked that, and the lobby went into the "Windowed Mode". Since the "Windowed Mode" wasn't fullscreen windowed mode as I had hoped, I decided to swap back and clicked the checked box to return to Fullscreen Mode. And here is where problems started. The screen got all grey(kinda same grey you sometimes briefly get after starting the game, but before it starts loading), but I knew the "Settings window" was still on because when I moved my mouse around, I could still hear the sound response you get when you mouse-over a button. I navigated to the "close" button and pressed on it(again, I was sure I was pressing on it because I got the sound feedback, and that button has different sound than the check boxes). I pressed and I pressed, and again, I got the sound feedback for pressing the button, but(presumably, I am basing this all on sound and my mouse movement, since the screen is gray all of this time) the settings window stays opened. Recently, I even managed to swap back to "Windowed Mode" and it worked, and I could do everything normally while in "Windowed Mode".

Now here is where the trouble starts. I was like "Meh, I can live with this windowed mode", and I went and joined someones game. Everything was fine, i chose my faction, buckled up, everyone x-ed, host pressed "Launch the Game" and... The game went grey again(same grey), but since the game crashed, I got an crash report(down in attachments). I tried another game, and same happens. At this point, I was pissed, mostly because I knew I just ruined 2 quite good games(well sure, it was rehosted, but you gotta hate leavers on start), so I decided to host my own "test" game. Same problem, I tried with few bots, I tried solo sandbox. The modes I tried were "Forged Alliance Forever", "3644" and "Claustrophobia"(all Forged Alliance based mods) and on all 3 of them , this same error occurs.

I did these tests back in the day(back than, for some reason, I couldn't create new topic in this subforum, that's why this is appearing only now), but recently(as in today, 18th July '15) I tested it again(quite a number of times), and the same problem still occurs.

Few noteworthy mentions as well; I tried: reinstalling, repairing, completely removing all traces of FAF and installing anew, the lobby was still in the same state(so I guess it is player-based, not installation-based setting, which is kinda dumb if you ask me). Also, very important: I tried to start up a "Vanilla" from FAF, and it worked just fine(I guess because settings for Vanilla SupCom lobby wasn't tempered with), the lobby looks normal(Fullscreen), and I can actually start a Vanilla game. The

I use a PC:
Win 7 Ultimate SP1, 64-bit
Intel Core i5-3350P 3.10GHz(quad core)
4,00 GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7700
Plenty of HDD space, no worries
(and yes, I know most of these tech specs are pretty useless, but hey, you asked for as much info as possible, so have it :D)

crash log - probably the one you want to check first
game log
forever log

Edit #1: I own SupCom and SupCom: FA on Steam, and I can run both version independently of the FAF lobby, it works just fine.

Sorry for that initial wall of text, hopefully you survived all the way to here. Thanks in advance with all and any kind of help you offer.

Your problems started when you fiddled with the settings so I would start by deleting the settings file, it is stored here C:\Users\ username \AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance and called game.prefs

I'd've been interested to see your old prefs file (I guess you deleted it now, alas) to help figure out what went wrong.

That "windowed mode" supposedly runs the lobby in a windowed mode and then pops back to full screen when the game starts: makes it a bit more convenient to chat in the other lobby while waiting for your game to fill up.
Seems something went a bit wonko in your case.
