Cybran stealth field generator Circle is not Accurate

Postby RogueShaman » 01 Aug 2015, 02:24

Cybran stealth field generator Twilight Stealth Circle is not as big as it shows. I tested it multiple times in sandbox using a straight line of T2 pd across from Twilight until it reached edge of the circular stealth parameter, then I used another AI view in fog of war with radar. It shows two T2 pd's in the circle is still detected by enemy radar for some odd reason. If I put another line of T2 PD to the left or right of the existing line of T2 PD it detects 3 pd's in the circle. I tested this yesterday and years ago but never reported it so It has nothing to do with the patch. I think this nerf or bug should be fixed or removed. This also could be affecting T2 mobile stealth field generator; Deceiver and other factions but I haven't tested it.

there is the same "issue" with radars. Radars do not detect enemy's directly when then go in the range of the radar.
English is not my native language, so correct me if i make mistakes. thx

How do you go to an AI's point of view in sandbox?

I cant reproduce this. Could you put a replay or specific steps on how to get this?

I used a 2 human player networked game for testing.

Hi. I can finally confirm this bug.
Please see the attached pictures. I constructed a whole area of walls within the UEF stealth generator's radius. And observed the radar blips from a 2nd player in a 1v1 network.
There exists a large dead zone especially at the bottom of the projected radius. I probably didnt notice this from my last post because I built in the area on the left which the generator is effective.
Ill put this up as an issue on github.

With generator ON. It does not cover the area precisely.

This is probably "not a bug".

I expect the effective area of the field is modelled as a sphere. The outline, as with all outlines in the game, is a projection onto the terrain.

This is similar to how weapon ranges (which usually describe spherical or conical regions)are also represented as circles (as the sphere has been projected onto the terrain).

If you try it on a completely flat map, I suspect you'll find everything works "right". There's probably not a lot we can do to "fix" this, as this behaviour is almost exclusively implemented in native code.

I tried it with a custom map thats totally flat. The stealth field is more even, but still doesnt work as intended. The resolution of the mesh is not very good.
Is there nothing much that can be done about this?

Some extra stuff i found out.
The previous post it may appear that the stealth field is not symmetrical. It actually is, but its effect with respect to the displayed range circle depends on the placement of the generator in the map. This is because not only the resolution of the field poor, the field's position is on a rather coarse grid.

This is a mobile stealth unit placed within the walls. (I deliberately added more walls such that its much bigger than the ingame range circle of the unit)
I nudge the unit slowly from right to left, but the stealth field can only take two discrete positions. Nothing inbetween is possible.

So if you place the generator at a certain spot on the map, the actual field may be slightly to the left or right (or up or down), but definitely smaller than the displayed circle.
Probably the advice is to avoid the outer 20% of the field range as it may not be reliable. I dont think we can 'fix' this issue.
I believe this applies to other intel stuff like radars/sonars etc, though i didnt give those a test. The intel at the edges may be a bit suspect.

It has been shown before that stealth works as a cylinder not a sphere. I am not sure about weapon ranges.
