FA has failed to start/Log problems

Postby SuperWeapons2770 » 03 Apr 2016, 22:53

Number 1: I have tried to find the solution to the "Fa has failed to start" error that I get every time i try to join/host a game on this thread: /viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11631
My problem with this thread is I have no C:\ProgramData folder. The only folders I have are the steam apps folder and the C:\Program Files (x86)\Forged Alliance Forever, and it has no bin folder in it.

Number 2:Where are the logs located on the computer? I haven't seen a thread that says this, which is really weird considering you need them for any post.

I am running windows 10.

hi, first welcome to faf

so, by default a windows user does not see hidden files or folders, you can either change that in options under view tab or you can type the complete folder name in the Run Dialog box, you just need to press Windows key + R at the same time, then type C:\ProgramData\FAForever press return and it will open a windows inside the folder that FAF uses to store data, log folder will have your logs

before playing faf, install Forged Alliance from DVD or Steam, then launch it and create a profile, username and then change graphical settings and so on, then exit Forged Alliance

Open FAF, go to Options -> Settings -> Game Path

Default FA folder for DVD version:

Code: Select all
C:\Program Files (x86)\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance

Default FA folder for steam version

Code: Select all
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance

and you should de ok to join/host games

Ok, thank you for the help of viewing the files. I also should say that I have been playing on faf for a while and just now have gotten this error. I have moved the files from steam's forged bin and now I went to put the files from the Lua folder into the bin like described, but I have no files in the Lua folder. What should I do now?

any program you install registers its the location and uses that, if you move it, it just fails

so, if you moved Forged Alliance files or FAF files, you need to uninstall in control panel delete all files that you moved and install again

No, what happened was earlier today I went to start a game of faf and when i tried to join, I recieved the error "Fa has failed to start." So I went and searched and found the forum mentioned above. I tried to use this guys fix
Leo wrote:Guys "FA has failed to start" is easy to solve. for some unknown reason FAF lobby is NOT downloading all files it should download.
So here is how you fix it:

1 - Go to your Supreme Commander Forged Alliance folder ( where you have it installed ). if u have Steam version should be in this location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance

2 - Select all content inside the "bin" folder , copy it.

3 - Go to "C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin" and Paste all the content you have copied from FA forder. if appear a window asking for overwrite existing file select "copy and replace".

4 - Go to "C:\ProgramData\FAForever\lua" folder, copy all content ( there should be 7 files ), and paste on :
"C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin". A window Will appear asking for overwrite the existing files select "copy and Replace"

5 - Enjoy! =)

Hope i've helped

This issue will probably be solved automaticaly in a few days, but this is how i managed to fix it manualy.

Good Job Sheeo and visionik.

However I have no files in my "C:\ProgramData\FAForever\lua" folder, so I don't know how to solve the problem. I did not move the files I only copy/replaced them.

well, although I have to congratulate you because you used the search function, that issue was with a previous faf version, there were some more updates since that bug appeared.

so, after your FAF is correctly installed C:\ProgramData\Faforever contents will be only the essential files for FAF to run, but when you open FAF, go to Play tab and host a game, it will start to download files, some of them will go to C:\programdata\Faforever\bin, but this is an automated process

if you host a modded game or the Beta balance mod, FAF will download different files and place them in the same folder, so when the game launches you will have all the correct files

so, in other words, you should let FAF decide what goes into those folders

So I went and uninstalled and then reinstalled like you said, even deleting everything in C:\ProgramData\Faforever. I then tried to host a game, the launcher downloaded some files and then i got the same error, "FA has failed to start."
I think it might be a problem with C:\ProgramData\Faforever\bin\ForgedAlliance.exe because the file tries to run that command and then it shuts down. Here are forever logs: http://pastebin.com/5MVW1yZt
I also ran it vanilla on steam, and it worked just fine.

So I still have this problem. I have reinstalled multiple times to try to fix it, and none of the reinstalling has done anything. Logs are up above in a different comment. Could it be I'm missing some files? Maybe the launcher just isn't downloading the files correctly. Could someone send me their C:\ProgramData\Faforever files? Maybe if someones files are working and i replace mine with them it will work.
