Random PC crash

Postby Killerbishy0 » 29 Jul 2016, 11:05

Ok, so I have been having this problem for a while now where in the middle of a game (I'm not sure what the cause is) my gpu (I assume) will crash and I have to restart my computer. What happens is my screen just has solid lines/bars across it sometimes blue, green or grey and the sound is stuck on a single repeating tone. Obviously at this point I can't do anything but hold the power button to restart my comp. I'm a noob with tech stuff, please go easy on me = (

These are my logs.

EDIT: I also just noticed in the game log right at the end, it says something about running out of memory.

DeviceD3D9.cpp(866) Ran out of memory

This means, DirectX 9 cant allocate momory to the GFX card. Because you gfx card driver is crashed.

In this case with solid bars or lines over the screen, this could be broken memory on your GFX card or overclocked or just to hot.
(don't go and buy a new card, there are some more errors that can crash your gfx card :) )

Game.log:

Code: Select all
info: not safe C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin\..\gamedata\faforever.nxt
info: not safe C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin\..\gamedata\lobby.nxt

i never saw a "not safe" there, but i guess, you should reload those files. (Mabye a HDD failure?)
Go to C:\ProgramData\FAForever\gamedata and delete everything you find inside gamedata.
This will be reloaded if youstart a game over the FAforever Lobby.

Code: Select all
info: DISK: AddSearchPath: 'c:\programdata\faforever\gamedata\labwars.nxt', mounted as '/'
warning: Couldn't locate zip directory for 'c:\programdata\faforever\gamedata\labwars.nxt'
warning: Search path element "c:\programdata\faforever\gamedata\labwars.nxt" is not a valid .zip file.

The games tries to activate (load) labwars mod. but there is no file found for that.
in this case, there is a file found, but its not a zip. So the File is damaged. (HDD fail, virus ?)
Deleting C:\ProgramData\FAForever\gamedata will also reload those files.

Code: Select all
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/xDead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/xDead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/XDead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/XDead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/xDead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/xDead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/LV_Dead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.
info: Can't find texture "/env/lava/props/trees/LV_Dead01_s1_normalsTS.dds" -- trying fallback.

Those files sould be inside your f:\program files (x86)\steam\SteamApps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\gamedata\env\env\lava\Props\Trees folder.
These are original files and sould be found. (Again HDD fail, or virus ???)
Please go to steam and verify all your gamefiles.

After all, i see damaged zip files on your HDD. Maybe you changed them by yourself or your Harddrive is not working perfect, or you have a maybe a virus on your system ?
This can also crash your GFX card, if some files and textures are not found.

Check your hardrive for errors and reload the gamefiles. then try again.

Well, I did everything you said here. When I checked my local files with steam there was nothing found to be missing. I scanned my computer and didn't come up with any viruses. I also deleted the files you said to. Funnily enough it hasn't happened again yet, but I have a feeling it is going to at some point. Until that point I will continue to play and hope for the best.
If it is something to do with my Graphics memory, would turning down all my settings help at all?

Its very hard to describe GFX errors;
Here is a verry nice article about GFX card errors:
http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html

But i am more concerned about damaged zip archives. This should not happen, and has nothing to do with your GFX card :)
