Cannot seem to do anything without problems

First I downloaded this "Downlord's" alternate FAF client. That got nowhere. I could not even begin due to the "create account" button being disabled.

So I tried the standard FAF client, registered a new account, everything seemed fine at first.
I then decided to link this to my Steam account..... this is when problems arose. At first everything was stated as "successful". Except it's not been successful.

But when I run the FAF client now, it seems to accept my first FAF client username / password (ie NOT the Steam account user/password) and I am able to browse through the client's different sections, but whenever I try to do anything such as download anything from the vault, it asks me to log on again, and then refuses to accept the above username / password. It will not accept my Steam username / password at all.

What have I done wrong and how do I fix it?

linking your FAF acc to steam is a method to disable the UID check for your FAF acc which is being used to prevent people from making multiple accounts and use those to smurf
so linking your FAF acc to steam doesn't mean you can use your steam user+pw to log into FAF you still have to use the username+password you chose for FAF

If you cannot remember your FAF password you can reset that here.
If you cannot remember your FAF username you should be able to see it in the e-mail you got during the registration process.

Ok, so my Steam acc user and passwords aren't used by the FAF client - that helps to clear things up a little!
Now I'll try resetting the FAF acc password and see what happens.

Resetting the password seems to have stopped the repeated log-in requests, but I cannot work out how to download any new maps or mods from the vault!
Can anyone give me a step by step guide?

i'm just assuming that you're using the regular client
the wiki has lots of information eg for the map/mod vault

if you're using downlords alpha client then the map/mod vault might not be 100% finished yet but i'm pretty sure it's under construction atm
