Release 0.16 serious problem

Postby MobiusBE » 10 Sep 2017, 20:12

Hello everyone

I'm having a serious problem with the new FAF-client release 0.16. The tabs are totally non-responsive for me. It looks like the client is frozen, but it actually isn't, it's just not outputting anything. Clicking on the tabs 'Coop missions' or 'Play' results in nothing happening. I can go to the Chat Lobby, but that is non-responsive as long as I stay on the tab. I have fixed my problem by reverting to release 0.13.2. I have made a screen capture to illustrate the problem, as it's not easy to explain what exactly is wrong: https://youtu.be/aXV3e882xSE . As you can see, this release is totally not working for me. At the end of the video I reinstall release 0.13.2. Everything is fine after that!

I have never had any issues with the FAF client and I've been around for quite some time now...
Any suggestions?

Kind regards

I had the same problem, it seems to occur with the Windows 1703 version, I have fixed my problem by reverting to release 0.14.0 instead of 0.13.2.

Thanks for your reply, good to know I'm not the only one. For the people looking into this: I also have Windows 10 version 1703 (latest version atm).

It appears that there are many issues with Windows 10 version 1703 (e.g. see here: https://www.windowscentral.com/windows- ... -and-fixes ).

You will probably have to wait for Microsoft to fix whatever they broke here.

I can't see any errors thrown in the logs, and the symptoms look more like issues with the platform / video drivers / Qt rather than our code. There isn't much we can do here, except monitor upstream for any fixes. You'll either have to wait until Microsoft fixes their sh*t or somebody fixes their sh*t for them. Of course you can try the old Windows "reinstall everything 3 times" voodoo, or switch to a sane OS like Linux :)

Thanks for your replies. It's annoying that this is probably Microsofts fault...

Is there a particular reason why 0.13.2 (and also 0.14 according to another person with the same problem) is working fine, but 0.16 acts up all strange? Something has to be different between the versions that makes this act up like this, no?

Can I just stay on 0.13.2 for as long as it is needed or will there be a time where I HAVE to update to still be able to play with the other people in FAF? I play this game on a nearly daily basis, so I wanna be able to keep going :).

0.13.2 is based on essentially a completely different runtime framework (pyqt4 vs. pyqt5). That runtime framework is old, crusty and entirely obsolescent.

We will definitely stop supporting 0.13.2 at some point, but we're going to try very hard to not do that before the problem is fixed for everyone.

Not everyone who is running Win10 version 1073 has this issue by the way. It seems that it only manifests for a very specific combination of Windows version, installed windows updates, and installed graphics drivers.

The best way to make sure you will not get surprising problems stopping you from playing is to help us test new releases. Over 5000 users have tested the 0.16.0 preview version and none of them had your problem - there are just too many different possible setups to cover everything.

We always announce updates with big changes and provide beta test versions a long time before we make the final release. The first public preview version of 0.16.0 was released a month ago.

So if you check the What's New tab (or https://www.faforever.com/news) regularly for announcements and test our beta versions, you can help us make the update experience better for you and for everyone.

Thanks for all the info. I'll be sure to test out the newer versions and give feedback in the future :).

For general information to anyone who might read this: I'm running Win10 version 1073, all latest windows updates installed, latest graphics drivers for GTX 1050ti. You never know if it's useful for something... :)
