Lag Issues

Postby Bell » 09 Jan 2018, 01:21

So I brought up my lag issues making games unplayable in chat, and that went about as expected as the only person willing to answer me basically ignored everything I said. You know, something like:

"Maybe your internet is too slow"
"I have 1000 Mb/s Internet"
"Are you doing anything else on the internet?"
"No"
"Stop downloads because those slow down the game"

Anyways, so yeah. I went into a 1v1, it was fine. No lag whatsoever, the game ran smoothly. I went into a 6v6 on Dual Gap, literally unplayable, everyone blamed me, yeah not a fun time. However, I remembered something. I just yesterday downloaded a new game called AirMech Strike. This game is a sort of, top down shooter, RTS hybrid. It has two game modes, 1v1, and 2v2. When I play 1v1, there is 0 lag, and everything plays just perfectly. But when I go into 2v2? The game lags the whole time, I get "You have a bad connection, you may be vote kicked if the issue persists" messages, and it doesn't let up.

So it seems my internet doesn't want me to connect to more than one other person at a time or something, I'm not sure? Because when I play games like say, League of Legends, there is no lag whatsoever. I have 32 ms ping. World of Warcraft I have 77 ms ping. So... yeah.

So... you go into a 6v6 game. Lag starts to happen.

step 1: press f11 and see pings and small networkstats window appear at the top right corner.
1.1 Are pings stable? are ther any spikes? one person or few?
1.2 Networkstats window looks scary. but most importan part is "behind" column. I don't remember exactly how to "read" it but everyone should have same numbers except for you... when someone loses connection they can be seen as "behind data". (i don't remember D: )

When you see issues with someone in ping or netstat window, you should understand that if there is a problem, you can only know that problem is between you and that player (many don't understand that and just start blaming other player for causeing problems) first thing you should do is to ask everyone else to check if they have such problem with that player (check pings and behind column).
So if you see a ton of lagers in game, it is very probable that problem is somewhere close to your side (could be ISP, FAF proxy, router... idk what i am not expert on that)

Step 1 should be enought... Step 2 for me was trying to use pingtest.net to identify packet loss. I could have great internet speed to US or AUS or Brazil... but also have 5-10% packet loss... Happened to me once, gone by itself, so i can probably blame ISP
pingtest.net was nice, cause you could test packet loss between you and any location
pingtest.net no longer works in browser, you would have to download a desktop app.. that does not allow to choose location... so i guess it is pointless, unless you find some other good way to check packet loss.

What about your upload speed? Its good that you can download super fast, but in 12 you also need to be able to send data to everyone. 2Mbit upload shloud be fine for FAF. So check that out?
