Now I actually can link the account, but can you use an account with a shared game? Forged Alliance does not appear in the public games list in the profile, even if I can play it and it's listed in my steam account.

having the "shared" version of someone else is not good enough

You don't play FAF with a Steam account. You play with a FAF account.

Your FAF account needs to be "linked" to a Steam account that owns the game. If you link your FAF account to a Steam account that does NOT own the game, you won't be able to play.

You could "link" your FAF account to the Steam account that owns a copy of the game (if the owner gives you permission but a lot of people wouldn't share a steam password, and if they do that, they won't be able to link their own steam account to FAF).

Correct, FAF does not check with the underlying Forged Alliance.exe was put on your computer through Steam or any other way (if you bought a disc off Amazon, or if you pirated it, etc.)

The protection that FAF has is to require Steam-linking one time only. After you steam-link your FAF account, you can use that FAF account from any computer.
