Can't load the client

Postby kenkthulhu » 26 Nov 2019, 04:31

and I can't uninstall it either.
Double click the FAF icon -> the "downlord's FAF client v1.0.0" title screen comes up -> after 6 seconds it is replaced very quickly with (I think) the login screen/gui -> and then this vanishes.

I have tried:
* reinstalling, which upgraded but looks like it didn't
* whitelisting the "c:\pf\downlord's faf client" directory and downlords-faf-client.exe file
* task manager doesn't show it running
* i get a "running as admin" warning which I have followed - so, not run as admin

This USED to work once in the past but doesn't now.

What could I try to resolve this?
How can I uninstall it and try again?

update: I ran it as admin -> same result (open DL FAF splash, then flash the UI, then gone).

So I got into eventvwr and found this:
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Downlord's FAF Client\uninstall.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3d9.dll

Direct3D ???
What to do about that?

SOLVED:
Short answer: Turn off MSI Afterburner
Long answer: I mean what the ...? Really? Does anyone think that this should have been fixed eons ago?

Short answer: No.
Long answer:
a) Client developers need to be able to reproduce an error in order to fix it. This is probably not the case.
b) The client works for literally thousands of users. So if anybody encounters a problem, it is usually on the users side. And it is mostly related to other tools that interfere unasked with our clients or very uncommon Windows setups (e.g. moving user profiles to custom paths, weird characters in Windows username etc.). The most common tools are anti virus tools or other "optimizer" or "cleanup" tools. The fact that turning off MSI Afterburner fixed it, qualifies it to be such a tool. There is nothing we can do if some other tool is blocking us. The only other apps the client interacts with are the ForgedAlliance.exe, some manually shipped .exes and Discord.
