FAF installer doesn't like steam version

Postby BlackFish » 30 Sep 2011, 05:36

The Steam version of FA that was recently released is using 3603 or some random version. It's preventing people from installing
FAF on their steam version. From what the discussion I had earlier with Nuhallis on fafchat and gpgforums it appears that the steam
version is 3603? with some new matchmaking system.

Blackfish is correct. I got the same impression from talking with Bob Saget that Steam is using 3603. I hope that we can make FAF compatible with the Steam version. I haven't bought it myself, but it certainly seems like 3603.

Also, about FAF compatibility, obviously the hash function + FAF lobby + FAFInstaller and the .msi would all need to be changed... but I *think* the FAF patch would be just fine because it replaces every file that a 3603 balance change would be made in, if I'm not mistaken.

Wait, the steam version is using 3603, that's mean that THQ approved that patch, and it has passed QA ?

So why it's not on GPGNet ? It's confusing.

If someone got more details than "I think that", I'm interested.

My "I think that" :
I think that the exe was recompiled to make use of steam DRM, and FAFInstaller doesn't get it.
I don't really think that the game has changed at all or use 3603.

The other problem you can have is that the Steam Installer doesn't actually install the game, it just creates a bunch of steam cache files, so there is no bin folder from which to make binFAF.

hows that? is steam not using GPGnet? or do we have steam 3603 and non steam 3599 users in GPGnet being not compatible? wtf?

that all sounds weird. But to be honest, I dont think we loose a huge playerbase on steam :P those people who buy it there now, werent interested in the game till now, and just play it, cos its on steam
They wont play a long time online anyway.

Steam probably checks the installations, like it always did. And why should the general steam user play on FAF? hes new to the balancing, and will use the implemented matchmaking.

someone has to buy it and check it (someone we can trust, cos we know he isnt dumb :D)
i would, but 10€ is too much for me for a 5 year old game, I already own^^
if it was 4-5 I would certainly buy it, just to support the idea of FA being a great game, no matter who gets the money for it.

Fact is:

It's not using GPGNet and use instead Steam to connect players. The version is 3603 and it's not compatible with GPGNet...and not with FaF too.
I don't see how we could change this as the .exe is different. Giving the patched .exe but then Steam will certainly knock at Zep's door to say that they are not happy to see a bypass to their DRM.

The Steam version seems to be a dead end where Steam FA-players are forced to stay on Steam servers.
Sad because it's sure that sales action would bring many new players on FA.
And I would be curious to see the actual version of this 3603? Is this with the gimped T2 Transport? The almighty building eraser Com-bomb?

Well as it seems...the Steam version is not a good thing as it splits the community for real.

We don't know if its' 3603, and even then, FA network layer can be linked to anything : Steam, Gpgnet or FAF.

If the command lines are still available, there is absolutely no problem, and no need to hack anything.
