CRASH - Error decompressing data

Postby bugblatterbeast » 17 Apr 2015, 11:24

I have this crash quite frequently. It tends to happen earlier in a game or not at all. Can be on 1v1 games or 5v5, and probably more often on larger games (but is still very random). All game logs end in the following:

info: Error decompressing data from ip179-100-211-87.adsl2.static.versatel.nl:6112: CDeflateOutputFilter::BufWrite(): call to deflate() failed.

Have reinstalled Supcom and FA and FAF but it still occurs. Was reported last year, the previous report said it had resolved after reinstallation.

Would appreciate any help with this one as it's super annoying :)

Have run memory test, cpu test and gpu test with no obvious issues. Computer does not seem to struggle with the load at all.

In case anyone gets this error, it seems to be a result of the compression that is used to send game information between the players' computers. According to Sheeo this compression may be switched off in future anyway, so that might see some improvement.

I have seen some improvement by taking unnecessary links out of my network setup. I seem to have the least number of problems when connected by cable to my router.

It's unclear whether disabling compression will solve this, as there could be another underlying cause for the buffer write failure.

Does it still happen while connected by cable or is it just less often?

I've found references to a similar crash in other games (notably Demigod, another GPG-developed RTS). Working solutions involve a reinstall, and sometimes it's also necessary to delete settings/preference files afterward.

As the reinstall didn't work for you, you might try deleting your game.prefs file. I recommend making a backup first in case it doesn't help. The file is located hereabouts: C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance

Buffer write failures sometimes occur with low HDD space, no free allocated RAM, data files which have grown too large, etc. These are some potential things to look for when a crash happens.

The problem does seem to occur more frequently when my connection is overly complicated (I used IP over power for my setup sometimes, but I can connect directly to the router with a long Cat 5 cable which seems to get a better result).

There don't appear to be any performance issues with the PC itself. The only issue is the "deflate failed" error.

Curious to know if anyone else is getting this crash.

I have reinstalled everything again and if anything it is worse than ever, even when connected directly to the (new and expensive) router.

Might see if I can get my hands on a different network card.

OK - reinstalled again (just FA and FAF this time), and I seem to be much better than I was just before the reinstall (when virtually every game was crashing). So far I am about 5 games without a crash, and a number of them went on for a decent length of time.

But it still happens, but it's been a single crash in quite a few games now.

Latest update. Had a few crashes so I bought a USB network adaptor on the 23rd of January. Since then I have had 1 crash in ~11 games. So initially I would think that the number of crashes has declined slightly.
