"Community rating"

Postby Downlord » 12 Jul 2015, 18:19

We face problems like "same maps played over and over again" and "not enough ranked match players" and others.

Do you think that something like a "community rating" (or "experience" system) could help to solve these issues? The more games you play, the more points you get. Common maps give less points, uncommon maps give more and so on.

The more points you get, the higher your level. With higher level comes... I don't know.
Even if there's no real gain in getting a higher level, I think the prestige will be motivation enough for a lot of people. But I'm sure you guys have some great ideas on what people could "unlock". And if it's just achievements like in many games :-)

Tell me what you think. And please, don't assume that I want to misuse the global rating for that; no.

Rewarding uncommon maps does not sound like a good idea, unless you want people to play bad (thus unpopular) maps to "farm" points. I don't think you have to "discipline" people to play other maps than they like too, if someone likes to play only setons or gap, is it fair to punish him for it by giving him less points? Treating players differently might lead to some bad blood..I think normal awards would be a better start.

50 ranked games..100 ranked games..
10 exps built in ranked games..20..
50 ranked games as cybran..
50 ranked games as cybran in a row! 100..
etc.

Obviously normal games can't count there, because it is too easy to get them there. :D This would reward ranked play without "punishing" other players.

GPG had this, and you could choose 3 of this awards and display them as icon next to your name. Maybe 1 is enough though.

Bad choice of words on my side. Let's say if it's the first time for me to play gap of rohan, I get full points. Same if I haven't played it during the eg. last 10 games. But playing it over and over again gives 1 point. That's just one possible implementation; we're free to chose what makes sense.

Punishing would be removing points. You're not punishing them. You're rewarding others. Like in Tony Hawk's pro Skater; if you do the same trick over and over again you get less points for it.

What I'd like to do (And it's on my long todo-list) is a form of trigger-based awards system (Akin to achievements).

My idea is the awards could be very diverse -- I'm fond of the proposed special ACU skins that were linked here on the forums a while ago. Avatars are a pretty obvious award as well.

Two ideas to encourage ladder:

  • Many people are stressed out when they play ladder and then they choose not to play. Perhaps that can be lessened by an anonymous mode, and/or by an unranked mode.
  • Display ladder rating more prominently, then it will become more prestigious especially for people who aren't in the top 50. Finding yourself on the n-th page of the ladder ranking list which is also hard to find is less encouraging than displaying it in the lobby like is done with global rating.

Anonymous mode seems really pointless.

I could see why people want to play unranked though, but then they could just host a 1v1 and make it unranked.
