Was chainging deviation a good Idea?

Postby Turinturambar » 13 Jun 2018, 15:39

If I remember correctly in summer last year (or at least some long time ago) deviation was increased. (so that now players end up at a deviation of 65 instead of 45) That was done with the intend to make it easier for old players who returned after a long break to be able to loose rating quickly and get balanced games faster.
As far as I can remember there have not been many players coming back after deviation was increased, so I would say the change was in that regard rather pointless.
A negative side effect of this is (imo) that rating fluctuates stronger, so it is easy to loose 100 points and more on a bad day (which can be frustrating) or win 100 points and more on a good day (which can cause stop players playing (at least for some time) because they don't want to loose their pretty 2200 rating).
Apart from those extremes high fluctuation makes rating less reliable and harder to judge how good your opponent is at the moment (since he might easily be over/under-rated by 100-200 points relative to your own rating)
So I think I would prefer returning to a lower deviation again.
(does this actually belong here or into general discussion?)

I agree with turin. I had a few days where i got from 1.9k to 2k or reverse in 5 or 6 games. Most of the time i won/lost of them depending if I had good or bad day. They were often vs the same player which made one of us go like 10 positions down and other 10 positions up in ladder which I don't think is healthy for the ladder.

you could also look at it as rating diff of 100-200 doesn't mean that much any more. Did they also adjust the rating range ladder searches for? It could mean more games for you if it did.

there was no change to how rating is calculated recently

From what I remember we just gain and lose more displayed rating per game than before. Where it was often 5-6 points won or lost, now it's ~10. I don't really see much problem with this, the complaint before was that rating moved very slowly and that was valid imo.
